What is Kota Doria Fabric? Rajasthan's Featherlight Weave

Kota Doria Fabric- Rajasthan's Featherlight Weave

Last Sunday we were having our fortnightly brunch, when a friend entered the room and I genuinely lost track of what I was saying midsentence.

She was wearing a serene, pale sage green saree that had the most delicate block printed border and the best part it was moving with her body like water. I could not help myself and asked with admiration in my eyes “What is that dear?”.

“Kota Doria”, she smiled as if she was waiting for someone to ask. I really did not know what that meant but I was fascinated by the look and feel of the featherlight fabric. So, I had to know more

So what exactly is Kota Doria?

Kota Doria, as the name suggests is a handwoven fabric from Kota, Rajasthan. The name is a combination of the place Kota and doriya which means “Thread”.  The kota doria fabric is a classic combination of cotton and silk threads. They are woven together on a traditional pit loom.

I have an eye for details and really wanted to know more about the interesting pattern on the saree. My dear friend continued, “Well, what makes the saree completely unique is its structure. You can see patterns of tiny, evenly spaced square checks. And they are woven directly into the fabric. These squares are called “khats”.

I was awestruck. The “khats” are not printed on the sarees. They are not embroidered on. They are actually built into the very architecture of the cloth, thread by thread.

Someone asked, “Meera how come the saree is so transparent but it also has a unique built to it?”.

Meera replied with an equal air of confidence, “You see this is because of the open construction, the gaps between the thread- that gives the Kota Doria its signature transparency and lightness”.

The History of Kota Doria fabric

By now everyone has already started to look up “kota doria” on their phones. Another saree enthusiast friend came up with the history of this fabric. The story started in the 17th century when a Mughal General named Rao Kishore Singh brought master weavers from Mysuru Karnataka to Kota. He requested them to make something that people can wear in the Rajasthan heat comfortably.

The weavers created actual magic and the artisans of Kaithun village (located 15 kms from Kota) have been refining that skill for the last three hundred years. The village comprises about 1500 weavers from the Ansari community who live and work here. Men and women both work at pit looms weaving thread by thread, khat by khat.

Why is Kota Doria fabric unique?

Each piece is handmade and exclusive in nature. Presently a Geographical Indication (GI) tag protects    the authenticity. It ensures that the real thing can only come from Kota.  You can get Kota Doria sarees online at The Noolagam. Here they are sourced directly from weavers, making it original and verified.
The knowledge that lives in the hands of the weavers is unique and it cannot be replicated in the factory by any high-end machinery.

The Three types of Kota Doria- Which one is for you?

1. Pure silk kota doria- For special occasions

These are best for weddings and festivals. Made entirely from mulberry silk, pure silk kota doria is the most lustrous. It drapes beautifully and has a particular sheen to it. The photographs come out great and truly there is nothing quite like a pure silk kota doria.

2. Kota Doria Cotton Saree- The Daily Wear

The most in demand and most loved of all. These sarees are woven from hand-spun cotton threads. They are durable, breathable, and soft. You can wear this saree to work, to lunch with friends, and also while going on a solo date. It softens to your body over time. Going by price range, it is always best to start with the cotton variant.

3. The silk cotton blend- The middle path

When you cannot decide between cotton and silk and love both equally, go for the blend variety. When most people search for Kota Doria sarees online, this is what they're likely to find. It works for almost any occasion. Part silk for the sheen and part cotton for the traditional feel.

Real or Fake- How to check?

As Kota Doria gains popularity, the chances of imitations and fake products increase. Here is a checklist to understand that you are holding a real Kota Doria fabric-

a) The weight test- Pick up the fabric and feel the lightness. If it feels heavier than usual, it’s a fake copy.

b) The Khat Test- Look closely at the checks, if the squares look structural and not printed upon. Go for it.

c) The texture test- Real Kota Doria has a very light crinkle to it. It has a crispness that comes from cotton threads. Feel it to understand.

d) The light test- Hold up your fabric against the light. If it looks translucent and its light passes through, then you are holding a real Kota Doria.

e) The GI tag- The best guarantee of all. The tag confirms that the fabric was handwoven in Kota by verified artisans.
